The Honda Accord Celebrates 50 Year Global Anniversary

From Honda Press Release

Honda is celebrating a major global milestone with the 50th anniversary of the Honda Accord. Since its debut in 1976, the Accord has become synonymous with reliability, engineering excellence, and forward‑thinking design.

Honda Australia proudly joins the global celebration, recognising the Accord’s unique place in the hearts of Australian drivers, having delivered more than 25 million units to customers across over 160 countries and regions worldwide.

The Honda Accord is the second-longest-running automotive nameplate in Honda’s history and has become a flagship model in Australia for almost five decades. First launched in Australia in 1977, the nameplate has won numerous Australian awards, including Wheels Car of The Year which was the first for a Japanese manufacturer.

Director of Automotive, Mr Robert Thorp outlined that  “The Accord has found a special place in the Honda Australia lineup over the past 50 years. It represents everything our brand stands for quality, innovation, and long-term trust. As it celebrates this milestone globally, we also celebrate the generations of Australians who have chosen the Accord.”

Over the decades, the Accord has evolved through multiple generations, each one reflecting Honda’s commitment to innovation and its ability to anticipate the needs of Australian drivers. Marking a major turning point for the Accord, the 2024 full‑model redesign introduced Honda’s first integration of Google built‑in, featuring Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the latest apps and services from Google Play.

Five Decades of Innovation
Across 50 years, the Accord has achieved global recognition for:
>Setting new standards in safety, including early adoption of airbags, anti‑lock braking, and Honda Sensing driver‑assist technologies.
>Leading efficiency and performance, from the early CVCC engines to today’s advanced hybrid systems.
>Design evolution, transitioning from a compact hatchback to a sophisticated sedan known for refinement and comfort.
>Cultural impact, becoming one of the best‑selling vehicles in North America and a benchmark for mid‑size sedans worldwide.

For Australia, the Accord’s future aligns with Honda’s commitment to offering more electrified and hybrid models, while delivering vehicles that meet the evolving needs of the market.
