MG Motor Malaysia Officially Launches the Locally Assembled MGS5 EV in Malaysia

MG Motor Malaysia officially launched the locally assembled MGS5 EV in Malaysia, marking the next phase of the brand’s localisation journey following the first CKD line-off of the model in Melaka earlier in March.

The launch signals a major milestone for MG Motor Malaysia as it expands its electric vehicle line-up while strengthening its long-term commitment to the Malaysian market through local assembly.

Built on MG’s dedicated rear-wheel-drive electric platform, the new MGS5 EV combines everyday practicality with dynamic driving performance. Compared to the earlier imported CBU version, the locally assembled CKD model introduces an upgraded power output of 151kW and 350Nm of torque, delivering stronger acceleration and improved responsiveness.

The MGS5 EV also supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 150kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes under optimal conditions. Its horizontal ultra-thin battery layout contributes to improved cabin space, lower centre of gravity and enhanced driving stability, while a driving range of up to 446km (WLTP) offers flexibility for both daily commuting and longer journeys.

The MGS5 EV LUX Long Range variant further enhances comfort and convenience with premium features including full leatherette seats, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and a hands-free power tailgate.

Safety remains a key priority for MG, with the S5 EV equipped with seven airbags and the brand’s ADAS 2.5 advanced driver assistance system, including features such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control. The model has also achieved five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP, reflecting MG’s commitment to global safety standards.

To provide peace of mind for EV ownership, the MGS5 EV is backed by an 8-year / 180,000km battery pack warranty, together with an 8-year / 160,000km warranty for the motor control unit.

“The official launch of the locally assembled MGS5 EV marks an important milestone for MG in Malaysia,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “It reflects our continued commitment to localisation, innovation and delivering electric vehicles that combine performance, technology and practicality for Malaysian customers.”

He added, “With the MGS5 EV, we are proud to introduce a model that not only strengthens our EV portfolio, but also represents our confidence in Malaysia as a strategic market and manufacturing hub for MG in the region.”

The local assembly of the MGS5 EV is carried out at the PEPS-JV (Melaka) facility, in partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad, supporting Malaysia’s broader automotive ecosystem through supply chain development, technology transfer and local industry participation.

The Pegoh facility is capable of assembling battery electric vehicles (BEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and internal combustion engine (ICE) models, supporting MG’s broader regional growth ambitions. Production capacity for the MGS5 EV is estimated at between 120 and 180 units per month, with an estimated annual output of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles in 2026. Bookings for the MGS5 EV are now officially open, with final pricing for the MGS5 EV LUX Long Range starting from RM 116,900.

To mark the official market introduction of the locally assembled model, MG Motor Malaysia is also offering a launch promotion package worth up to RM 9,000, subject to terms and conditions.

Following the official launch, MG Motor Malaysia will also be hosting a Nationwide Showroom Test Drive event this weekend at all MG Showrooms, inviting customers to visit their nearest MG showroom to test drive and experience the new MGS5 EV firsthand.
