Following the successful pilot project implemented in Indonesia in 2021, Michelin expands its efforts to minimize single-use plastics through the elimination of plastic wrap on motorcycle tires to key markets across Southeast Asia. Locally, Michelin Malaysia will be rolling out their premium motorcycle tires without plastic wrap to authorized dealers nationwide from 1st December 2024.
The move in Malaysia is part of regional efforts that resulted in a reduction of an estimated 317,700 kilograms of plastic waste in 2024, in the five major markets of Southeast Asia, namely Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Additionally, the move directly contributes to Michelin’s goal of zero net waste from tire wraps across its global operations – a significant step towards sustainable mobility.
“This move is one of the many tangible actions that we at Michelin look forward to, in aligning with our ‘All Sustainable’ vision, aiming to evolve our growth model towards one that takes our planet’s limits into consideration,” said Prichapakorn Dangrojana, Managing Director of Michelin Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. “In line with our ‘4R’ circular economy approach—‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Renewable’, we aim to deliver the same exceptional performance and quality in our motorcycle tires that Michelin is known for, while working toward a more sustainable future.”
Dangrojana added, “Our consumers are at the heart of all we do at Michelin Malaysia, and we understand that more discerning eco-consciousness is on the rise. With Malaysia joining the majority of countries with Michelin operations that no longer use plastic wrap for our two-wheel tires, our consumers now get to contribute to protecting the environment and safeguarding the planet from plastic pollution alongside us.”
Together with the elimination of plastic wrap on its motorcycle tires, Michelin has re-designed the sticker label, affixed directly to the motorcycle tire tread, to contain all the necessary tire information for quick and easy identification. The motorcycle tires without plastic wrap still come with the same warranty coverage, which covers defects in manufacturing and materials, for 6 years from the date of production, ensuring customer satisfaction and peace of mind.
