Empower, Educate, Elevate: Stellantis Partners Penang Science Cluster to Nurture Kedah’s Future Innovators through STEM

Stellantis, the world’s fourth largest automaker and leading mobility solutions provider has formed a strategic partnership with Penang Science Cluster (PSC) to broaden access to high-quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Kedah and nurture a new generation of future innovators in the state.

Student intake in the STEM education stream in Kedah has consistently been 3-10% below the national average, and the region has seen a downward trend of 2-5% in recent years. The low enrolment has been largely attributed to a lack of interest and limited access to quality STEM education, making it imperative to develop new approaches that cultivate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among students.

The collaboration with PSC will emphasize teacher development and competency-building among students, creating a sustainable pipeline of skilled individuals ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow. Through this initiative, Stellantis aims to broaden access to STEM education for underserved communities in Kedah, fostering an environment where students are empowered to explore and excel in STEM disciplines.

Daniel Gonzalez, Chief Operating Officer, ASEAN, Stellantis said, “At Stellantis, we are committed to uplifting local communities through education. Especially with a regional manufacturing plant in Gurun, we want to be a catalyst for STEM-related employment opportunities in the state and play a pivotal role in preparing the next generation for a future driven by technology and innovation. We believe that empowering young minds with the tools and opportunities to explore STEM fields is critical to nurturing future innovators.

“By collaborating with the Penang Science Cluster, we aim to produce quality teachers and build future competencies among students, ensuring that Kedah becomes a thriving center for innovation and socio-economic growth,” added Gonzalez.

This partnership aligns with the New Industrial Masterplan (NIMP) 2030, which aims to develop a high-income and skilled workforce through advancements in automation and technology. Furthermore, Kedah is part of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), which has an ambition to be a world-class economic and technology hub by diversifying the economy from traditional industries like agriculture and manufacturing to high-value sectors such as technology, aerospace, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.

Dato’ Ooi Peng Ee, CEO of Penang Science Cluster shared that a strong foundation in STEM is essential to achieving these goals, making the Stellantis-PSC partnership a key contributor to regional and national success.

“This partnership with Stellantis is a significant step forward in strengthening STEM education in Kedah. By providing students with the right exposure and learning opportunities, we are not only sparking interest in these fields but also preparing them for a future where innovation and technology will play a central role. Our goal is to make Kedah a beacon of talent and innovation, and we are confident that this initiative will have a lasting, positive impact on the community,” added Dato’ Ooi.
