AS THE top-selling non-national MPV (multipurpose vehicle) in the Malaysian vehicle market, the Mitsubishi Xpander has certainly caught the imagination of many buyers desiring such a vehicle. Since its introduction to the market in 2020, more than 40,000 Xpanders were sold to date.
To continue that strong momentum, the Xpander is given the due update to maintain its appeal here. Although the improvements are mostly aesthetic, there are new equipment added as well to give the Xpander a more contemporary standing.
Nevertheless, good looks still play a significant part on first impression and the latest Xpander scores well on that count. Mitsubishi has applied what it calls the T-shape design for the front and rear; T-shape LED (light emitting diode) headlamps and T-Illumination LED tail lamps. The new dynamic shield design in front is a definite boost of model identity that stands the latest Xpander in very good stead.
Added to that the ‘stylish’ tailgate spoiler to optimise aerodynamics and enhance stability and 17-inch dual tone alloy wheels to strike the eye, the new Xpander should turn heads on the road. New scuff plates on the door sill adds a fresh touch too. The tailgate spoiler is part of Authorised Dealer Package for the Xpander Plus model.
Stepping into the Xpander, new touches that give it a contemporary aura should impress one immediately. The nine-inch multimedia display with Apple Car Play and Android Auto Ready features is hard to miss and all the more to appreciate for the new Xpander owners. The new premium soft touch and sporty steering wheel with audio and cruise control should be well received along with the digital climate control for the aircond system.
Those with handphones that could be charged wirelessly would certainly welcome the wireless charger on the central console. This item and the multimedia display are also part of the Authorised Dealer Package for the higher-price Xpander Plus variant.
Improved tactile points come in the leatherette centre console armrest and better convenience in the second-row seat with foldable armrest with cupholders. The newly added electronic parking brake and brake hold auto feature elevates the Xpander to a current day status.
For the Xpander Plus with its Authorised Dealer Package, there are the all-round monitor to make parking easier and front and rear DVR (driving video recorder). The rear DVR is said to be a first in class feature and it’s most definitely a useful item.
These new goodies give the already well featured Xpander even more value for the money. After all, it boasts of a best-in-class 225mm ground clearance, comfort optimised suspension and small turning circle for easy manoeuvring in urban centres. The flexible interior with folding seatrests and neat storage spaces in the cargo floor box and underseat tray should continue to be strong selling points.
The Xpander continues to be powered by a 1.5-litre MIVEC engine that delivers 77kW (105PS) and 142Nm. Likewise, the engine output goes to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. Mitsubishi has resisted the trend to go CVT (continuously variable transmission) probably due to customer feedback.
There appears to be a minimal change in price with the Xpander at RM99,980 on the road without insurance but the Xpander Plus with Authorised Dealer Package is RM10,000 more. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) says these are introductory prices that would apply till December 31. If you are set on buying the latest Xpander, you better not wait too long.
MMM is organising a media drive next week with the new Xpander. As we are part of the media team invited, we would tell you more about the Xpander’s driving quality and handling dynamics after our on-the-road experience.
